A Question Worth Following.
Chris did not approach this research from a conventional academic route. His professional life had already crossed several very different complex systems.
First came science. As an applied ecologist, Chris was trained to observe systems in which individual components rarely make sense in isolation. Environment, behaviour, pressure, competition, resources and timing interact. Change one variable and consequences can emerge elsewhere.
Then came banking. Years in senior executive leadership replaced ecological systems with human ones: organisations, markets, customers, leaders, competing priorities, risk, performance and decisions of consequence.
Later, working closely with entrepreneurs and executives exposed another layer — the extraordinary differences between how individuals experience and respond to apparently similar circumstances. Across those worlds, one principle remained remarkably consistent:
Complex systems reveal themselves through relationships, not isolated data points.
In 2017, Chris began exploring whether that principle might extend much further into human experience.
THE PRIVATE RESEARCH
Thousands of Cases. Thousands of Questions.
The research became systematic.
Chris began constructing mathematical profiles and comparing them longitudinally against known events across individual lives. Not merely one event. Timelines.
Successes and failures. Career acceleration and disruption. Leadership transitions. Business events. Relationships. Periods of opportunity and adversity. Major decisions. Personal and professional turning points.
As the archive expanded, the question changed. It was no longer simply: Can a pattern be found?
It became: Does it recur? Does the same relationship appear elsewhere? What happens when several patterns converge? Does sequence matter? Are some variables more significant than others? What happens when the expected relationship isn’t present? Can an apparent anomaly reveal something missing from the model?
And, ultimately: If recurring structures can be identified retrospectively, can they provide useful foresight prospectively?
This became an iterative process:
Observe → Map → Compare → Test → Challenge → Refine → Repeat.
That process has continued for years.
WHAT EMERGED
Relationships Became More Important Than the Number.
One of the most important developments in Chris’s research was the recognition that individual data points had limited value when considered alone.
The significant information appeared to exist in the relationships between them.
Patterns intersected. Sequences repeated.
Some variables reinforced one another. Others appeared to counterbalance each other. Certain configurations repeatedly coincided with significant periods within documented timelines. And some relationships appeared considerably more consequential than others.
The research therefore evolved from relatively simple calculations into the examination of a multi-dimensional pattern architecture.
Chris began mapping:
Recurrence — patterns appearing at multiple significant points across a timeline. Convergence — independently derived patterns aligning within the same period. Sequence — the order and progression through which patterns develop. Intensity — periods in which multiple signals appear simultaneously. Cycles within cycles — shorter sequences operating within larger developmental structures. Contradiction — competing patterns potentially creating very different expressions of the same period. Anomaly — outcomes that challenge the expected relationship and require the model to be reconsidered.
Over time, these relationships became the foundations of what Chris named the Intelligent Mathematical Blueprint.

An evolving research programme that continues to be tested and refined, and the archive matters for another reason. It records the development of the thinking. Earlier models can be compared with later ones. Predictions can be compared with outcomes. Errors can be revisited. Variables can be reweighted. Apparently significant relationships can be tested against additional cases. The objective is not to protect the model from contradiction.
Contradiction is information.
FROM HINDSIGHT TO FORESIGHT
The Future Is Not Fixed.
This distinction sits at the centre of Human Futurist.
The research does not propose that a person’s future is predetermined.
People make decisions. Circumstances intervene. Markets change. Relationships alter trajectories. Opportunity can be taken or ignored.
Risk can be mitigated or amplified. The research asks something subtler:
Could understanding recurring patterns within an individual’s own architecture provide additional context for decisions made under uncertainty?
That changes the purpose of the IMB. It isn’t about being told what will happen.
It is about recognising patterns, context, timing and possibility before making decisions that carry consequence.

TAKING THE RESEARCH INTO A UNIVERSITY

Putting an Unconventional Proposition Under Academic Scrutiny.
As the private research developed, Chris wanted to subject the IMB to a different kind of challenge.
He entered doctoral research at Bournemouth University.
The proposed PhD was ambitious: to investigate whether the IMB could identify significant historical events at greater-than-random accuracy and explore whether the resulting insights could have practical value for entrepreneurs.
The research programme developed formal research questions, null and alternative hypotheses, a literature review and a proposed mixed-method methodology combining quantitative and qualitative investigation.
This was an important period in the development of Chris’s thinking. But it did not become the destination.
CHOOSING INDEPENDENT RESEARCH

The PhD Ended. The Research Didn’t.
The underlying proposition of the IMB was unconventional. It attracted significant scepticism within the university environment. Ultimately, Chris chose not to continue with the PhD. He did, however, continue the research.
And this distinction is important. The Human Futurist does not present an unfinished doctorate as an academic endorsement of the IMB. Nor should the university’s involvement be interpreted as validation of the framework.
Instead, that period represents something valuable in the intellectual history of the work. It forced the research into a more formal structure.
Questions had to become hypotheses. Assumptions had to become testable propositions. Methodology had to be considered. Alternative explanations had to be confronted. And the limitations of the research had to be articulated. Chris subsequently returned to independent research and has continued developing, testing and refining the IMB privately.
That independence allows him to continue following the evidence, including where it challenges his own assumptions.

RESEARCH WITHOUT A REQUIRED CONCLUSION
The Most Interesting Answer May Be the One You Didn’t Expect.
Independent research carries a responsibility.
If you are free to investigate an unconventional question, you must also be willing to discover that your original explanation was incomplete.
That is why the IMB continues to evolve. Patterns that recur deserve further investigation. Patterns that fail to recur matter just as much.
Unexpected outcomes expose weaknesses. Contradictions create questions. New cases increase the available evidence. And every refinement creates another opportunity to test the framework against reality.
Chris’s position is therefore not that every question has been answered. Quite the opposite.
There is enough recurring structure within the research to justify continuing to ask the question.
After more than 20,000 hours, that enquiry remains active.
